Generating Efficient Dynamical Models for Microelectromechanical Systems from a Few Finite-Element Simulation Runs

چکیده
In this paper, we demonstrate how efficient loworder dynamical models for micromechanical devices can be constructed using data from a few runs of fully meshed but slow numerical models such as those created by the finiteelement method (FEM). These reduced-order macromodels are generated by extracting global basis functions from the fully meshed model runs in order to parameterize solutions with far fewer degrees of freedom. The macromodels may be used for subsequent simulations of the time-dependent behavior of nonlinear devices in order to rapidly explore the design space of the device. As an example, the method is used to capture the behavior of a pressure sensor based on the pull-in time of an electrostatically actuated microbeam, including the effects of squeeze-film damping due to ambient air under the beam. Results show that the reduced-order model decreases simulation time by at least a factor of 37 with less than 2% error. More complicated simulation problems show significantly higher speedup factors. The simulations also show good agreement with experimental data. [399]

Finite Element Solutions of Cantilever and Fixed Actuator Beams Using Augmented Lagrangian Methods
In this paper we develop a numerical procedure using finite element and augmented Lagrangian meth-ods that simulates electro-mechanical pull-in states of both cantilever and fixed beams in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) switches. We devise the augmented Lagrangian methods for the well-known Euler-Bernoulli beam equation which also takes into consideration of the fringing effect of electr...
متن کاملInvestigating the Effect of Joint Geometry of the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding Process on the Residual Stress and Distortion using the Finite Element Method
Although a few models have been proposed for 3D simulation of different welding processes, 2D models are still more effective in design goals, thus more popular due to the short-time analysis. In this research, replacing "time" by the "third dimension of place", the gas tungsten arc welding process was simulated by the finite element method in two dimensions and in a short time with acceptable ...

In the present paper we focus on the application aspect of Krylov-subspace-based model order reduction. We present the software mor4ansys that allows us to directly apply model reduction to ANSYSTM finite element models. We show that, for many MEMS thermal and structural mechanics problems, model reduction is very efficient means to generate compact models for system-level simulation. Finally, ...

Electrostatic gap models for hierarchical MEMS circuit design are studied and parameterized through a series of finite element simulations and mathematical modeling. The models take into account the fringing fields which contribute large capacitances in low-aspect-ratio surface-micromachined devices. Angular orientation of electrode sidewall is taken into account to accommodate simulation of ma...

A fully automatic macromodeling methodology to generate scalable reduced-order models for microelectromechanical systems is presented in this paper. Krylov subspace methods are used to generate reduced-order models from detailed higher-order models of the device under consideration. The entire methodology is implemented in a symbolic computation environment to preserve dependencies on physical ...
